Chiro care helps 88% of slipped disc patients – research
New research has provided further confirmation of the effectiveness of chiropractic health care in treating low back pain.
A Swiss study of 148 patients aged between 18 and 65 with slipped, or herniated discs, found that 88% of patients’ conditions had improved one year after receiving chiropractic treatment.
“It’s exciting to see yet more evidence that chiropractic health care is a valuable and reliable form of health care for people with serious back pain,” the President of the Victorian Branch of the Chiropractors’ Association of Australia, Dr Helen Alevaki said.
“Researchers estimate that 80 per cent of Australians will experience significant back pain in their life time and causes hundreds of thousands of Australians to leave work early.
“There is a strong body of scientific evidence that indicates chiropractic health care can be extremely effective in treating back and neck pain. The challenge for chiropractors is to let more Australians know just how safe and effective chiropractic health care is, so that a greater number of Australians can relieve their back pain and enjoy their lives more.”
The study, published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, involved conducting Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans on each patient to confirm lumbar disc herniation – a common cause of back pain. Patients were then treated by a Chiropractor and the effects of treatment were evaluated using several different methods.
After three months, 90.5 per cent of patients were improved, with 88 per cent experiencing improvement in their back condition after one year. The study found that the vast majority of patients with MRI-diagnosed disc herniation reported clinically relevant improvement to their condition.
“Slipped discs can cause great pain. They can occur as a result of lifting heavy loads, as a result of age or simply lifting up a child for a cuddle,” Dr Alevaki said.
“Chiropractic treatment is non-invasive and drug-free, so many people with serious back pain like to visit their local chiropractor for treatment and advice.”
